Dead Mall

A dead mall is defined as a shopping mall with a high vacancy rate or a low consumer traffic level. Many malls in North America are considered “dead” when they have no surviving anchor store or successor that could attract people to the mall.

The Steeplegate Mall opened in 1990 and has struggled with high vacancy rates throughout its existence. Its largest retailer is JCPenney, which is the only traditional anchor store left. The mall opened with four large retail anchor stores, a food court and room for about 62 storefronts. Now all that remains is 14 stores/kiosks. The fate of the Steeplegate Mall is unknown.
